D for Determination

Skiing across the Greenland Icecap requires determination, focus and physical endurance. When our team embarked on this expedition several years ago we faced some of the toughest weather conditions I have known.

Determination kept us going when biting winds cut through our layers, and when the relentless white-out conditions blurred the horizon into an endless expanse of snow.

It wasn’t just about physical endurance; it was the mental grit to keep putting one foot in front of the other, despite the temptation to stop and shelter. Each small step, taken with purpose, moved us closer to our goal.

In leadership, the parallels are undeniable. Determination is the engine that powers progress when challenges arise.

I’ve listened to countless leaders talk about their business challenges in coaching sessions, and we have reflected together that true leadership emerges when the journey gets tough—when decisions are complex, outcomes uncertain, and progress feels painstakingly slow.

Whether you’re navigating a polar icecap or steering a team through a difficult period, determination means staying committed to your vision and values, even when setbacks make the goal feel distant.

Because when you combine determination with a clear purpose, it’s amazing what can be achieved.

Where has your determination taken you?
