Every Map Begins with Blank Space

Take a moment to look at this image. Where do you think it is? A familiar environment or somewhere completely unknown to you?  Share your guesses below….

Experiencing landscapes like this desert or stretches of icecap with a sense of vastness reminds me of the mix of excitement and unease we feel when facing the unknown.

There are many different routes that can be taken. What’s ahead to be discovered?

This year, I partnered with Pierre Heistein and Eveline van den Heuvel to create a workshop designed to help people envision and shape their future. It was an intuitive journey into the unknown for all of us, and through the process, we realised that our individual strengths, when brought together, produce an impact far greater than any of us could achieve alone.

By experiencing the discomfort of beginning with blank space and following our instincts, we discovered something new and useful.

Every journey, crossing the Arctic, exploring Patagonia, or leading a team through change begins where the map ends. The blank space is not a threat; it’s an invitation. It’s where imagination meets courage, and where leadership is forged.

  • Where on the world map do you think this photo was taken?
  • In your leadership map, where is your blank space right now?
  • Looking ahead to 2026, what might you want to chart differently?
