Listening for Comprehension
I like this video clip of Kevin Sharer, Amgen CEO describing what what helped him become a better listener.
So if you want to become a better listener try this:
- Check your understanding by asking clarifying questions – so you are saying……?
- Listen for what’s not being said – use your intuition to help uncover the missing message
- Listen for feeling – how is the person feeling at different parts of their communication?
- Allow time for full understanding before reacting or challenging
Its always better to seek to understand others first before seeking to be understood
