What does it take to achieve success?

According to a recent study there are ten common attributes required to make it to the top.  The research saw experts interview 42 individuals across various professions from sports stars like Sir Clive Woodward to media personalities such as Ruthie Henshall and Katie Piper in order to crack their secrets to success.  How many of the ten do you have?

1. Burning ambition

Winners aim and aspire for the stars. They focus on the future and create stretching goals and challenging targets in order to help them succeed. To have burning ambition you need to have persistence and a willingness to go above and beyond.

2. Dogged determination

In order to truly succeed you must have an unwavering determination to conquer your challenge – even when things don’t go to plan. If you can survive under pressure, deal with uncertainty and remain focused, you are well on your way to achieving success.

BONUS TIP:  Dress sharp

Successful people dress for the job they want, not the job they have. But looking the part doesn’t have to cost the earth – Gant’s men and women’s shirts  bring you style at the perfect price point.

3. Realistic optimism

Being able to turn a negative into a positive is a real attribute, so long as you stay realistic. So next time you face a challenge, try to remove your fear of wrongdoings and focus solely on the task that needs done – and take calculated risks to help you get there.

4. Unwavering belief

If you’re afraid of failure, you’re never going to succeed. While it does help to be aware of your weaknesses, remember that sometimes success is just a matter of timing. Find out what you need to succeed and make sure you are good enough. Once you believe in yourself, you’re one step closer to achieving your goal.

5. Intrinsic generosity

Those who are willing to spend time and money on others are more likely to succeed. People that can support teammates and colleagues are in turn able to seek advice and support when they need it – meaning they never feel isolated or alone.

6. Mutual respect

Persuasiveness, empathy and tolerance are essential if you want to get ahead – particularly if you want to be a leader. To succeed long term you must be willing to understand things from other people’s perspectives.

BONUS TIP: Stay Passionate

People who are positive are energised by being upbeat in the face of adversity, always remaining optimistic even in difficult circumstances. They readily focus upon achievements and positive outcomes.

7. Maximising opportunities

Take full advantage of every opportunity. When you next see an opening, grasp it with both hands and make full use of the situation or task.

8. Disruptive Thought

Try to be an agent of change – people who make their mark always challenge themselves and others. It’s better to take the risk and then do damage litigation if needed.

BONUS TIP: Stay responsible

People who are responsible are energised by being held accountable for their actions and the actions of the teams that they work within. They are reliable and amenable, accepting responsibility for their work.

9. Constant Curiosity

Learn from your mistakes. Successful people learn from each challenge and take any opportunity to develop their skills – and they never make the same mistake twice.

10. Single Minded Focus

Having a high attention to detail is critical for success. Winning individuals take a methodical approach and focus on perfecting on the small, daily tasks so that the larger tasks take care of themselves.
