The unknown is at the core of every great adventure. It’s what compels us to step off the beaten path, explore uncharted territory, and take risks that push us beyond our comfort zones. Yet, it’s also what makes us hesitate—because the unknown is unpredictable, uncontrollable, and often uncomfortable.
Last year, I explored East Greenland on an expedition cruise. The itinerary looked something like this:
– Day 1:Depart Reykjavik, Iceland
– Days 2–12: Explore North and East Greenland
– Day 13: Sail the Denmark Strait
– Day 14: Return to Reykjavik
Most of the journey was into the unknown. Each day’s plan depended on the weather, ice conditions, and the terrain around us.
For those who prefer certainty, this type of expedition may feel unsettling compared to a cruise with a fixed itinerary. But even structured voyages must adapt—because nature doesn’t follow a schedule.
In the end, we sailed farther north than most ships that season, encountered breathtaking landscapes and wildlife, and successfully navigated around ice floes that could have blocked our route. The journey required us to embrace uncertainty, trust the real-time decisions of the captain and expedition team, and stay flexible in pursuit of the overall mission.
In the workplace, the unknown is just as daunting. Whether launching a new project, stepping into leadership, or making a career change, uncertainty can be paralysing. We want a clear roadmap with zero risks before we act. But just like on an expedition, that’s rarely possible. Only by stepping into the unknown do we discover new strengths, uncover opportunities, and grow.
The key is to define a clear outcome —while accepting that there may be multiple paths to reach it. Approach the unknown with curiosity rather than fear.
Ask yourself:
– What can I learn from this?
– What’s the worst that could happen—and what’s the best?
By reframing uncertainty as a chance for growth, we open ourselves to experiences that shape us in ways we never imagined. We enjoy the experience of the unknown.
Today’s question – When was the last time you embraced the unknown? How might stepping into uncertainty unlock new possibilities in your life or work?
