Z is for Zigzag

How do we embrace the non-linear nature of adventure?

When we think of going on an adventure, it’s easy to imagine a straight line from point A to point B—a clear, defined route leading to a triumphant destination. But the reality is that adventure rarely unfolds in a straight line. It’s more like a zigzag, filled with unexpected twists, turns, detours, and course corrections. And that’s where the true magic happens.

When travelling on the Arctic Sea ice, we camped overnight having skied 12 miles that day.  It was down heartening to realise next morning that we had drifted back over a mile during the night on the sea ice and had to retrace our steps the following day. On expeditions, whether navigating polar ice, dense forests, or remote mountain trails, the terrain often forces us off our planned path. A crevasse blocks the route, weather conditions shift, or unforeseen obstacles emerge. These zigzags aren’t setbacks; they’re part of the journey, teaching adaptability, resilience, and creative problem-solving.

The same holds true in the workplace. Careers, projects, and personal growth rarely follow a straight trajectory. We encounter challenges, pivot directions, and sometimes start over. Yet, it’s in these zigzag moments that we gain the richest experiences and insights. Each twist offers a new perspective, each turn a lesson we wouldn’t have learned otherwise.

Zigzagging forces us to stay present, reassess our goals, and remain flexible. It reminds us that progress isn’t always linear—sometimes, the indirect route leads to the most profound discoveries.

So, next time you find yourself what you might consider to be ‘off-course’, pause and consider: What can this detour teach me? How might this unexpected path lead to growth I never anticipated?

Because in both adventure and life, the zigzags often hold the greatest treasures.

Think about your own path—when has a detour or unexpected turn led to something better than you originally planned?
